CHARACTER INFORMATION
CHARACTER NAME: Margaery Tyrell
CANON: Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire
TIMELINE: Season 6 Episode 10, right before the Sept explodes, killing her and everyone else inside.
AGE: She was 16 in the books, and the actress was 30 when she started playing the role…. so let’s split the difference and say 23.
REFERENCE: here!
PERSONALITY: Margaery Tyrell’s one goal in life was to become the queen, and her ambition was only matched by a personality that made her the ideal fit for the role. Her intelligence, empathy, and drive would have made her a force to be reckoned with in any world, and the flaw of the one she lived was that she had to marry a powerful man in order to attain any power of her own. By deciding that becoming queen was worth the risk that came from teaming up with the erratic, immoral Lannisters, the Tyrell family’s success was followed by inevitable doom.
Margaery grew up in Highgarden, which she proudly considers to be the most beautiful place in all of Westeros. This focus on appearances followed her through her life, and she always wore the newest, most daring fashions, even when she knew it would upset her rival, Queen Cersei. Unlike others who longed for the throne, Margaery fully understood the benefit of public relations, conversing with the common folk and planning for the leftovers of her wedding banquet to be given to the hungry poor. However, while her altruism is not fully faked, there is a limit to it. She will not speak against her family, who in a time of war refused to deliver food to those same starving people.
Margaery is a social butterfly and a bit of a flirt. It is heavily implied that she has had lovers before marriage, or at the least knows far more about the subject than a lady of Westeros typically seems to. She was able to change her behavior to suit all three of her betrotheds. With Renly, she was her most honest, and admitted that she did not care that he was in love with her brother, as long as he would give her a crown and still provide the realm with an heir. After his death, she knew her only chance for the crown involved marrying the vile Joffrey, and so she bonded with him over his own violent instincts, despite possessing none of her own. Margaery believed that she could temper him, or at least manipulate him to her will, but her grandmother believed that there was no use for such a man, and so made the choice to secretly assassinate the king, before he could do her grandmother any harm. When the young, naïve Tommen took over the throne, it was easy for Margaery to win him over and draw him away from his mother.
Despite her use of ladylike facades when facing her enemies or others who she does not trust, Margaery does have the capability for true kindness. Her friendship with Sansa Stark, though admittedly based in the Tyrell family wanting to marry the valuable Sansa to their son, continued on after the plot was found out and Sansa was betrothed to another. Margaery gave helpful advice to the younger woman and urged her to not give up even when her situation seemed unbearable. However, for Margaery family always comes first. This can be an admirable trait when it comes to her relationship with her brother, who wishes to protect her with his sword just as she wishes to protect him with her position as Queen. There can be darker implications, though, as when her grandmother poisoned a man in order to protect her and then framed others for the crime, Margaery had no issue with not speaking up and letting an innocent man possibly die for the crime.
Though Margaery believed herself to be capable of solving any problem and surviving every bump in the road on her way to Queenship, she underestimated the lengths her main opponent, Cersei Lannister, would go to in order to destroy her. After they were both imprisoned by a religious tyrant, Margaery feigned a conversion to the religion in order to be set free and given some power again, while privately planning to continue her own ambitions if given the slightest chance. But making an ally of a man who distrusted her was her greatest mistake, as when she suspected Cersei of plotting something, he refused to take her advice to leave the building that housed them, Margaery's brother and father, and dozens of innocent civilians, all of whom perished in the building's explosion. It is at this moment, when she realizes that perhaps all her dreams and plans were for nothing, that Margaery is transported to Svelte.
ABILITIES: Margaery possesses every skill highborn ladies are expected to have in Westeros, and she was also tutored in the art of manipulation. However, due to being a woman in a patriarchal society, she has no skill in fighting or weaponry and is used to having guards around to handle any sort of physical threat.
PERSONAL EFFECTS: A rather drab dress, befitting her new life as a humble member of the church, but also her crown.
PRIZED POSSESSION: A golden rose brooch, given to her by her grandmother.
CRAU PREMISE: N/A
